Power Transformation Engineering

Power transformation engineering of NWEPDI has reached domestic advanced level. In the 1970s, NWEPDI independently completed design of the first EHV power transmission and transformation project in China - 330 kV Liujiaxia-Tianshui-Guanzhong transmission line, which established our leading position in the industry. The Electrical Design Manual for Electric Power Engineering compiled by our experts of the older generations has been evaluated as the most authoritative reference book in the industry more than 20 years, which has been used not only as a guide for design work but also as important references for construction, installation and debugging. In recent years, NWEPDI has created new records in design of substation and converter station, for instance, exclusively responsible for design of Guanting-East Lanzhou 750 kV power transmission and transformation demonstration project, the first transmission line in China that was designed, operated and managed independently by our Institute, with all equipment being self-produced, This project won the Golden Prize for National Excellent Survey and Design Work. NWEPDI participated in the whole process of design and key technology research and made outstanding contributions to smooth completion and operation of the demonstration project.

During subsequent 750 kV power grid construction, NWEPDI has successively undertaken design tasks of dozens of 750 kV substations in the east of Yinchuan, Pingliang, Qianxian County, east of Weinan, Yuheng, Helan Mountain, Xining, Riyue Mountain, Qaidam, Jiuquan, Wusheng, Wubei, Turpan, Hami and Bayinguoleng, all of which have been put into operation successfully and laid a solid foundation for preliminary establishment of 750 kV power grid structure in northwest China and for access to main power grids in Xinjiang and Northwest China. It is the deep accumulation of expertise in the 750 kV power transmission and transformation project that allows NWEPDI to make important contributions once again to 1,000 kV UHV AC pilot demonstration project and co-undertake under unified organization of CPECC partial subject researches of 1,000 kV UHV AC power transmission and transformation key technology. NWEPDI is one of the design institutes that participated in the first 1,000 kV UHV AC pilot demonstration project in China.

Currently, NWEPDI has undertaken design of AC UHV 1000,kV Suzhou substation in the Northern Semi-Ring. In terms of converter station design, NWEPDI is currently the only design institute with business covering all existing HV DC voltage levels that range from ± 500 kV DC E’cheng Converter Station to subsequent ± 500 kV Baoji AC/DC Converter Station, ± 660 kV AC/DC Converter Station in east of Yinchuan, the first ± 800 kV Fengxian upward DC converter station (playing the role of B), ± 800 kV Tongli converter station (playing the role of B), ± 400 kV Golmud converter station in AC/DC networking project of power lines in Qinghai-Tibet railway, with ± 800 kV Hazheng DC converter station in South of Hami having been built and put into operation (playing the role of A), ± 800 kV Lingshao DC Lingzhou converter station and ± 800 kV Jiuhu DC Jiuquan converter station being designed (playing the role of A). Through a series of projects, we have had sound technical and personnel reserve that may provide better service for subsequent HV DC engineering construction. In the 330 kV networking project of main power grids in Yushu and Qinghai as designed by NWEPDI at an altitude of 3,850 meters, 330 kV substation in Yushu has been built and put into operation.

In terms of technical reserve, NWEPDI will persistently accumulate and upgrade applications of the most cutting-edge power grid technologies, such as 750 kV AC EHV and 1,000 kV AC UHV power transmission and transformation technologies, ± 500 kV DC EHV, ± 660 kV and ± 800 kV, ± 1,100 kV UHV DC power transmission and transformation technologies, AC compact power transmission technology, AC flexible transmission technologies and intelligent power grid, and provide better and more inclusive service to the owner.
