Engineering Exploration

Northwest Electric Power Design Institute (“NWEPDI”) possesses class-A engineering investigation qualification and class-A geological hazard assessment qualification. Furthermore, it has successively undertaken and completed surveys on numerous domestic and international power generation, power grid and EPC projects, with footprints spread over Asia, Africa and America. It has formed a technical force with national engineering investigation masters, registered engineers and various technical personnel as the core; and is highly experienced in electric power engineering investigation, with increasing integration of survey and design.

NWEPDI is at the national or industrial leading level in terms of the following technologies (but not limited to): deep collapsible loss survey, evaluation and foundation treatment technology, geotechnical engineering test and testing technology, high slope governance, survey and design technology, Gobi desert saline soil survey, evaluation and governance technology, high-altitude severe cold region frozen soil survey, research and governance technology, deep excavation construction precipitation and ambient environmental impact analysis technology, ambient hydro-geological survey and evaluation technology, substation water supply hydro-geological survey and evaluation technology, integrated site selection and route selection technology based on remote sensing platform, 3S multi-specialty integrated application technology, high-resolution satellite image wide-range terrain mapping technology, aerial survey technology, high-precision leveling technology, electric power engineering meteorological environment observation and analysis technology, overhead line icing observation, analysis and research technology, solar energy and wind energy observation and resource evaluation technology, electric power geophysical exploration test application technology, especially geological radar detection and exploration technology.

The engineering investigation business of NWEPDI consists of geotechnical engineering, surveying and mapping engineering, engineering hydrology, earthquake and geological hazard, drilling engineering, test and other specialties.

The geotechnical engineering covers 3 specialties, including geotechnical engineering, engineering geophysical exploration and hydro-geology. For more than 50 years, there has been a continuous expansion of business. The field work management and forms of staff organization have been optimized in a continuous manner. The technical service awareness has been enhanced continuously, and after abundant engineering practice and knowledge accumulation, the technological level of investigation has also been improved. Over the past decade, with continuous expansion of the power plant unit capacity and improvement of the transmission voltage class, new and higher requirements, market demands, the competition has been raised for geotechnical engineering investigation scope, depth of content, foundation scheme and ambient geological analysis and argumentation, etc., driving the development of professional geotechnical skills and promotion of capabilities. The extensive application of computer technology and the development of new equipment and new technological means provide a platform for the development of the geotechnical engineering specialty, which has developed from the previous single conventional engineering geological investigation to the integration of geotechnical engineering evaluation, design, consultation and governance, and has become more and more mature. Accordingly, NWEPDI has successively won a large number of awards in gold, silver and bronze category for national engineering investigation.

In surveying and mapping engineering specialty, NWEPDI possesses dozens of high-tech equipment at the international advanced level such as GPS receiver, electronic total station, precision level and electronic level, and holds core technologies such as full digital photogrammetry workstation, high-precision GPS control survey, high-precision settlement observation, high-precision square control network, geographic information system application and development. In this aspect, NWEPDI has won more than 40 national or provincial outstanding engineering investigation awards, and has edited nearly 10 national and industrial technical standards (as participant or editor-in-chief). It is a member of several national or industrial academic communities, and is at the national or industrial leading level in terms of integrated site selection and route selection technology based on remote sensing platform, 3S integrated application technology, aerial survey technology, settlement observation, etc.

The business scope of engineering hydrology covers two categories, hydrological survey and meteorological survey. NWEPDI not only provides hydrological and meteorological design information for the design of power plants (thermal power, nuclear power, wind power, solar power plants), substations, converter stations and power transmission line projects, but also undertakes outlet water flow regime, river (sea) bed erosion and deposition change, air cooling site meteorological observation, wind power plant wind regime surveying, solar radiation observations and other special tests. The main contents include: surface water source reliability demonstration, flood/low water analysis, river regime evolution and river bed erosion and deposition change trend prediction, small watershed storm flood calculation, reservoir regulation computation and dam break flood routing, wave and tidal level calculation, comparative analysis of air cooling meteorological parameters, preparation of flood control evaluation reports, wind energy resource assessment, solar energy resource assessment, mountain area design wind speed revision research, conductor icing thickness demonstration, conductor galloping area analysis, avalanche research and other special demonstration and research projects. With the adjustment of national industrial policies, the issuance of relevant national laws and regulations, and the acceleration of electric power engineering construction, the business scope of engineering hydrology have evolved from single to diverse development, with extensive application of new technologies, new methods and new means.

In terms of earthquake and geological hazard assessment, after 10 years’ development, NWEPDI has witnessed a steady promotion of the professional proficiency, optimization of the personnel structure and improvement of the technical service awareness. Currently it can provide site seismic safety evaluation and construction engineering geological hazard assessment for thermal and wind power plants of various sizes, substations and power transmission line projects at various voltage classes, with business spread over Xinjiang, Qinghai, Ningxia, Gansu, Tianjin, Henan, Shandong, Shaanxi and other provinces and autonomous regions.

The test specialty covers two business segments, soil test and chemical analysis. With strong technical team of professionals and advanced equipment, it has acquired the qualification certification (metrological certification) awarded by the Certification and Accreditation Administration of the People’s Republic of China. It has complete soil test equipment and chemical analysis equipment with intelligence degree at domestic leading level, including 12 sets of full-automatic high-pressure pneumatic consolidation apparatus, 72 sets of full-automatic medium-pressure pneumatic consolidation apparatus, 4 sets of full-automatic tri-axial apparatus and a domestic advanced soil test automatic data acquisition and processing system.
