Currently NWEPDI has a staff of 1,779, among whom are two national engineering design masters, two outstanding young and middle-aged experts of state level, 20 experts who enjoy the state special allowance, 89 professor-level senior engineers, 896 senior and mid-level technical personnel, 293 registered engineers of various disciplines. Moreover, there are three people getting PMP accreditation, four getting Australia MPD (Master Project Director) certification, five getting Australia RPM (Registered Project Manager) authentication as well as 68 project managers of domestic and foreign certificates.

Founded in October, 1956, Northwest Electric Power Design Institute (NWEPDI), a famous company in China electric power sector, is a wholly-owned subsidiary company of China Power Engineering Consulting (Group) Corporation. In the fields of 1000 MW ultra-supercritical unit, the air-cooled condenser unit design technology, ±500 kV DC power transmission engineering design, 750 kV AC power transmission engineering design, and ±800 kV DC & 1000 kV AC power transmission engineering design etc., it has been maintaining a leading position and even enters into some new technical areas such as IGCC, and wind power. The scale of international business is gradually developed. Power generation business has already expanded into the power engineering markets of Southeast Asia, South Asia, Africa, the Middle East, South America, and of many other countries. In 2006, the international business accounted for 35% of the total business, forming a new market structure—a balanced development of domestic and international markets. NWEPDI cooperates with many international and domestic renowned companies, groups and engineering firms to conduct extensive exchanges and cooperation activities. More than 60% of its engineering and technical personnel can conduct independent work in fluent English.
